At first glance, the glass curtain wall of this one-story building might look like just another beautiful façade, but behind it lies a state-of-the-art research and testing facility, which demanded Ronnisch’s exacting construction methods and project management. The CIMR presented unique challenges, including a high temperature fire chamber (up to 2300° F) and a clearance height of 30 feet to accommodate a massive interior crane system.
Perhaps most remarkable was the construction of two large steel frames for testing sections of poured concrete slabs (to simulate bridge decks and road surfaces). Such testing tolerates very little movement, so the frames and the embedded steel connection points that secure them to the pad must be exact to an eighth of an inch. Therefore, Ronnisch carefully collaborated with and managed communication among the steel contractor and Lawrence Technological University engineers to ensure that the immense test frames fit in their correct locations.
